Feeder Fun
Attracting hummingbirds to your yard is easily done by providing a dependable food source. To accomplish this, prepare sugar solution, fill a feeder, and place where the hummers can reach it. A simple process, but keep these points in mind:
Choose a durable feeder that is (1) easy to fill (2) even easier to clean, and (3) has very few parts. Having fun is the goal, not spending time on feeder maintenance.
Hummingbirds are attracted to red and yellow, but yellow feeders will also attract bees. Feeders that easily drip are more likely to attract ants. The best feeders aren't necessarily the most expensive ones. Our favorite feeders cost less than five dollars. Be sure to place your feeders where you'll enjoy the view. Consider hanging one outside a window to watch the “action” from your desk or sofa.
Change the solution every 4-5 days (more frequently in hot weather) to avoid the growth of bacteria and fungus harmful to hummingbirds.
